I tested dozens of cat litter mats and found the Gorilla Grip Thick Cat Litter Trapping mat to be the best overall.
Cat litter is a necessary evil of owning a cat. Unless your cat is an outdoor cat, you need a litter box to prevent messes around the house. However, there can be issues with even the best litter boxes if you have a messy (if lovable) cat.
This is where cat litter mats come in. Instead of the traditional litter box with clumpy litter all over your floor, litter mats are double-layered mats that are more comfortable for the cats and much easier to clean. It takes a few minutes to deal with and doesn’t make a mess outside the mat.
I’ve tested multiple cat litter mats, and my favorite is the Gorilla Grip mat. It’s thick and comfortable for the cat but extraordinarily easy to use. The Gorilla Grip is the original kitty litter mat and looks like a regular floor mat.
However, it has a second layer that traps the litter, urine, and waste and clumps it for easy cleaning. The top of the mat is soft on the cat’s paws and cleans them as your cat leaves – no dirty litter on your floors. It’s an excellent choice.
Of course, Gorilla Grip isn’t the only mat on this list. Several others focus on specific situations. If your cat has a urination issue or you need an extra large litter mat, I’ve created a list of other mats that might be better for your specific situation.
Every cat is different and has different needs. However, all cats still need to relieve themselves, and a litter mat might just be the answer you’ve been looking for.

Gorilla Grip is famous for making mats that don’t move. Once you set this mat down, it won’t slip and slide around. Instead, you can pour some cat litter into the coils and let the cats do the rest. Their litter mat is inexpensive and comes in multiple colors.
This litter mat is pretty basic – all you need to do to clean it is vacuum the litter out of the coils with a hand vacuum. It’s small and will fit in the corner of your kitchen or basement, underneath any standard litter box.
The Gorilla Grip is a great choice to keep the excess litter off your floors because it does what it’s supposed to do simply, and it does it well. You can even shake unused litter back into the box to prevent waste.
Unlike the Gorilla Grip, the Pieviev litter mat has an opening on the side. This opening, paired with the honeycomb design, makes cleaning out the litter mat extremely easy. All you need to do is loosen the excess litter and pour it back into the litter box.
The Pieviev litter mat is waterproof and excellent for protecting your floor from cat urine. If your cat tends to be messier with its urine or isn’t quite box-trained yet, this mat is a great choice. It’s made of rubber, so it’s easy to clean and won’t hold the smell.
This litter mat might not be quite as comfortable as the Gorilla Grip mat, but it comes in multiple sizes. For houses with more than one cat, it’s the perfect mat to keep the floors clean and urine-free.
Speaking of size, I would be remiss if I didn’t include this litter mat for the sheer size. Measuring 46X35 inches, this litter mat has the same type of coils as the Gorilla mat, just arranged in a pattern. It looks like a mat someone would have in their garage, but you can easily sweep cat litter out of it.
The mesh design captures the cat litter without making it sticky or difficult to clean. This was meant for pet owner who wants their cats to live in luxury – a mat this large is perfect for a home with several cats (or one very messy cat). It is also remarkably inexpensive for the size.
For those trying to save money or who just need a little mat outside of their kitten’s bed, this small litter mat is a perfect choice. It is shaped like a welcome mat with little mesh paw prints and will hold just enough litter for one cat.
This litter mat works just as well as the others on this list but is much smaller. It’s ideal if you have an older cat who’s unsteady on her feet or your litter box is enclosed. You can clean this mat by shaking it out or using a handheld vacuum.

Conclusion: Which Is the Best Litter Mat?
After all, which is the best litter mat? Even though I tested several that were larger, The Gorilla Grip mat still has my vote for the sturdiest and easiest to use. Unless you have several cats, you don’t need anything larger than the Gorilla Grip, and you won’t have to worry about it slipping or spilling.
