Some of you much like me might have the pleasure of having a large cat, in my case it is my Maine Coon!
But with great cat comes great responsibility and that means cat furniture for large cats. As any large cat owner is aware of regular cat furniture will not normally do the trick depending on the size of your cat. It may be up to you to think outside the box if you are not able to find any cat trees that fit your cat. I will provide some recommendations based on my experiences to be able to provide your cat with a tree all of his own.
Cat trees for large cats are very limited. As all cat owners are aware cat trees come in three main sizes, the tiny tree (which I feel cats out grow too fast), medium sized trees for most cats and the big cat towers for large cats! I am not saying that the large towers are only for large cats, as smaller cats will love them as well, but I am saying that this is your only real option if your cat is big. The main issue you will run into with the smaller cat trees is sturdiness. My Maine Coon is rather large, 20+ lbs. When we have had smaller cat trees in the house and he jumps up on them, or uses them as a scratching post, he is able to move the tree and in some cases I felt he was going to knock it over. Your best cat tree for large cats is to buy a sturdy (wood) cat tree that is tall (around 6 feet is ideal). I emphasize wood because there are several Do it Yourself to assemble cat trees that are sold that are made with cardboard tubes wrapped in rope… Your large cat will break these; mine had no issue doing so!
Cat furniture for large cats though is not limited to a cat tree! You can also make your cat a happier member of your family buy providing him vertical spaces throughout your home. There are simple solutions you can buy at IKEA or Home Depot to build decorative shelving for your cat to climb in your home. While there are lots of great made projects on Etsy.com that will provide your cat with shelving and furniture you can build these yourself for less than $10 dollars per shelf and it rewarding in knowing that you created your cat furniture for large cats yourself!
Cat towers for large cats should be provided in each room of your home, regardless of if you choose to buy trees, condos, shelving or any other furniture. Your cat should feel like an important part of your family and be provided places in each room where he can sit high and overlook the surroundings. Doing this and taking the necessary steps to provide your large cat with furniture will help make him happier and make him a more confident cat and member of your family!
