The Best Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes: The CatGenie
Cat litter is the absolute worst. It gets everywhere, it can be a pain to clean, and well, it usually smells. Cat owners are not a big fan of litter boxes, but we suffer through them for the sake of our furry friends. We’re lucky that technology has been improving more and more, and we’re lucky to live in a time where there are many self-cleaning litter boxes that are making having and cleaning a litter box a breeze.
In this multi-part product review series, I will search for the best self-cleaning litter boxes for you to help save time and money when making the switch from your basic litter box to the high-tech, self-cleaning ones.
I’d like to add a small disclaimer before we start: I have personally owned all of the products I will be reviewing, as I do not buy into websites or blog users that write articles or reviews on products they don’t own.
Now fresh from the opinions of my cats and myself, here are the best self-cleaning litter boxes you can find on the market.
This is the cream of the crop as far as self-cleaning litter boxes goes, and it really doesn’t get any better than this.
The CatGenie is a toilet-like, self-cleaning litter box that connects to a water line in your house and it automatically “flushes” out your cat’s waste and dirty litter. It’s so easy, you really don’t have to do much for your cat to have a clean litter box.
In my opinion, the CatGenie has a lot of pro’s and only one real con.
The best aspect of the CatGenie is that you’ll never touch cat litter again. Most the other self-cleaning litter boxes still involve dumping containers or bags of litter into the self-cleaning litter box. With the CatGenie, all you have to do is flush your toilet if it is in the bathroom or if you have the CatGenie hooked up in a different water line in your house, then you don’t have to do a single thing!
The CatGenie uses reusable granules and a cat litter deodorizer solution to clean the granules, dry them off and reuse them. Any waste is flushed in a water solution down the plumbing and all the work is done for you. The entire process takes about 20 minutes, but you can choose to have it clean the litter box automatically at timed intervals, or you can set it to clean it whenever you want!
The maintenance cost is not bad at all. You will have to order the CatGenie refill cartridges as well as granules from time to time; however they now offer a VIC subscription package that places this on automatic order so you can make your CatGenie ordering process just as simple as cleaning your litter box is.
The setup is nothing to be afraid of because the instructions that are provided are flawless in their execution of how to rig it into your bathroom/laundry room plumbing. Additionally, the CatGenie has the best customer service I have ever had. After one of my units broke (after three years and two moves), and I received a new one in the mail free of charge after a short call with customer service!
While I believe the CatGenie is the best self-cleaning litter box, there is one major issue that could stop you from getting the CatGenie: it has to be hooked up to a water supply and drainage system. This means that your placement of the CatGenie can be really limited in your home. Most owners could only hook the CatGenie up in their bathrooms or laundry rooms. For people who are already cramped on space, the CatGenie may not be the right self-cleaning litter box for you.
Another con could also be the cost of the CatGenie. Normally, it runs over $200, but you have to remember you aren’t buying as much litter. You also aren’t taking time out of your day to clean the litter box, and well, time is money.
In the end, the CatGenie is a great option when it comes to a self-cleaning litter box. While it may not be for everyone, it’s definitely a great contender if you’re looking into an investment into a self-cleaning litter box and definitely a better investment than the traditional litter box.
